MY GOAL IS TO SEE 100 NEW (to me) MOVIES BY OCTOBER 24, 2008

New movies, old movies, made for TV, on dvd, on TV, in a theater... anything. I just want to increase my movie knowledge by 100 movies in 100 days.

Day 100, total films watched: 100

Demons -DVD- ***

Awesome Italian demon film shot in Germany. The plot involves a group of people slain by demons watching a film about people being slain by demons.
Lots of impalations (is that a word?) dismemberizations (I am pretty sure that isn't a word) and a few demonizations (probably a word, and I probably didn't use it correctly.)

The Day the Earth Stood Still - Cable TV- ****

Knowing that a remake is on the horizon I thought now was a perfect time to see the original... but I didn't own a copy.
Luckily it was scheduled to air on TV... unluckily it was airing on AMC.
I hate AMC. Anyway I decided to watch it anyway and sit through the absurd amount of commercial breaks filled with promos (many for the film I was already watching!)
In addition as the film played the bottom of the screen constantly reminded me that a new episodes of "Mad Men" was on it's way. I don't know who these men are, but they were probably mad that a classic sci-fi film was being treated like a rerun of Judge Judy.
As for the film, it was great. Really a wonderful film with a cool message and some really memorable moments.

Spartacus - Cable TV- *****

One of those films I always thought I should see. In fact, I am a little embarrassed that I never saw it before. One of the reasons I had avoided it was that I generally don't like any film that takes place before the Civil War. Another reason was that I simply didn't own this movie. So, this week I recorded a pan and scan broadcast off HBO and I couldn't have been more pleased. What an excellent movie.

Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi -Cable- ***

This was a very cool documentary on a skater who found drugs and then god. Narrated by Dennis Hopper, it was uplifting and featured many cool pro skaters including Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Jason Lee, Steve Caballero, Eric Dressen, John Lucero, Gary Coleman, Simon Rex and Paris Hilton.
I was kidding on the last three... but it did feature Pauly Shore and David Arquette. No joke.

An American Carol - Movie Theater -**

This uneven film featured some great, great laughs and a solid ending. Also, John Voight puts in one of his better performances, playing George Washington amidst the ongoing farce designed to poke fun at Hollywood's far left.
The film features a pretty impressive lineup of stars including: Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper, John Voight, James Woods, Leslie Nielson, Davis Alan Grier, Christopher McDonald, John O'Hurley, Kevin Sorbo, Gary Coleman, Bill O'Reilly, Simon Rex and Paris Hilton.

Tarzan and the Mermaids -Cable TV- ***

This exciting 1948 Weissmuller Tarzan flick really showcased the reason I started this little challenge. I recorded this of AMC on a 6 hour VHS tape back before AMC started showing commercials, so this was probably close to a decade ago. Since then I have watched 2 of the 5 Tarzan flicks that this tape held. Now, I can bump that up to 3.
This was a pretty typical 1940s jungle picture with Tarzan trying to protect a girl from a group of natives being led by an evil westerner pretending to be a god.
There are no mermaids in this film.

Dance With Me Henry -hulu.com- **

This is the final collaboration of comedy giants Abbott & Costello. Made just a couple of years after they revived their careers with the Universal monster flicks, this one puts Lou as a parent who owns a theme park and Bud as a pal who has problems with the mob. It has an excellent chase scene at the end, but otherwise is underwhelming.

Bottle Rocket - DVD - ***

This is one of those films that I had really wanted to see for many years. It was good overall. It had a great soundtrack, good acting and a good story. Really worth checking out.

Swing Parade of 1946 - DVD - ***

During a recent bout of Stooge-mania (who hasn't suffered from Stooge-mania) I picked up a DVD set of "rare" Stooge projects and one of them was Swing Parade. This was a feature film (the last with Moe, Larry AND Curly) where the Stooges play comic relief to a bigger story about a girl who wants to be a star.
Pretty typical stuff, but with music by Louis Jordan and hi jinks by the Stooges, you can't go wrong.

Day 90, total films watched: 91

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl - airplane inflight movie- ***
Diminished Capacity -airplane inflight movie- **

I didn't know what to make of either of these films because I had never seen a trailer and I am not even sure I heard of them. Still, very entertaining.
Kit Kittredge: An American Girl was a nice Encyclopedia Brown type story involving a little girl, hobos, the Great Depression and Stanley Tucci looking like The Iron Shiek. The film was sweet, funny and told a compelling story.

Diminished Capacity stars Matthew Broderick as a man suffering from brain damage who goes to see his uncle (Alan Alda) who is suffering from Alzheimers. Oh yeah, it's a comedy.
I didn't realize this for about 25 minutes. It was too silly to be touching and too sad to be really funny.

L.A. Heat -Cable- *

Looking for something to watch early in the morning in a Disneyland hotel room, this seemed like a good choice. Afterall, I was only a short ride from Los Angeles and I had spent the past week there.
This was a bad movie. I hate to say that since, I bet somebody worked really hard on it. But it was bad.
It starred Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs who you may remember as Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington on Welcome Back Kotter. Also Jim Brown is in this film. It's a bad, cheap film about policemen that has every silly cliche all rolled into on film.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua -Theater- ****

I loved this stupid film. Yep, it's about dogs that talk. They also go to Mexico where dogs also talk, but they have accents.
I saw it at Disney's El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Before the film, the actually canine stars of the film appeared on stage and did tricks for us.
Adorable all around.

Day 81, total films watched: 87

Hancock -airplane inflight movie- ***
Get Smart -airplane inflight movie- **
Meet Dave -airplane inflight movie- ****

Wow, I love the new inflight entertainment systems on Continental Airlines. If I could be promised one of these, I would always fly Continental. Basically it's a personal 'on demand' service where the movie plays on the back of the seat in front of you. First film I watched was Hancock. I loved the first 45 minutes of this film, I hated the last 45. I don't want to spoil it, so I will just say the big reveal about Hancock not being "alone" was stupid. Stupid, unessasary and annoying. Boo!

Get Smart was a film I expected more from. It was entertaining, but not as funny as I would have hoped for.

Meet Dave on the other hand was much more than I expected. Perhaps the fact that this bombed so badly made me have such low expectations that it worked. It was great. Very funny. Basically you have Eddie Murphy playing a cross between Balki on Perfect Strangers and Herman's Head. Funny stuff. Weird ending, but still lots of fun.

Day 80, total films watched: 84

Nothing.

In preparation for my trip to Los Angeles I watched my favorite L.A. film, Jimmy Hollywood.
The film stars Joe Pesci and Christian Slater and tells a story about Hollywood during the end of it's seedy days (Hollywood lost a lot of it's luster in late 1960s until a new Hollywood renaissance occurred in the early 2000s.)
It's a film about crime and vigilantes. Highly recommended if you haven't see it... but it wasn't new to me.

Callaway Went Thataway - Cable TV- ****

In preparation for a trip to Hollywood I watched this minor classic featuring Fred MacMurray as a TV executive who must track down an old western movie star. The film was funny and had some great shots of old Hollywood. I especially liked the climax shot at the historic Los Angeles Coliseum.

Day 77, total films watched: 81

The Rocketeer -Cable TV- *****

This is easily one of my all time favorite movies. I could watch this movie again right now. I had put this one off for years and years and I can't imagine why. It's got a great story, great action, brilliant music, wonderful set design and a couple of perfectly cast villains.
I love the Bulldog Cafe, I love the destruction of the "land" in the Hollywoodland sign, I love the flight at a blimp, I love this movie.
What an exciting film.
If you are like me and haven't seen it, here is the plot:
Howard Hughes created a jet pack but it's now lost. A young man finds it and ultimately becomes a superhero. Some mafioso, Nazis, FBI and others are trying to get it back. Fantastic!
Set in Hollywood in 1938.

Day 78, total films watched: 83

Miracle Mile -Cable TV- ***
Fly Me To The Moon 3D -Movie Theater- ***

Miracle Mile is a cool 1988 thriller about a nuclear attack on Los Angeles. The film is told mostly in real time and has a great ending. I enjoyed it a lot. It's one of those films that is better the less you know about it, so I recommend you see it if you have Starz. It pops up there pretty often.

Let me say this... Fly Me To The Moon 2D wouldn't merit 3 stars, but in 3D... awesome. I am a sucker for 3D films and this was a pretty dang good one. It's a silly little flick with three flies (that act like Alvin & the Chipmunks) who stowaway on the first moon mission.
The film was actually better than I expected, it had some pretty slow pacing which is a big change for a modern cartoon. Of course this could be because it's actually a Belgian flick, or because it was originally 49 minutes and then expanded to 90 making them cram extra scenes into a fast paced film.
Either way, I liked the pace and loved the 3D.
Plus there was a space chimp in this and the voices of Kelly Ripa and Christopher Lloyd (who plays a character named Grandpa McFly... perhaps it was a Back To The Future reference.)

RATINGS SCALE * Not very good/ ** Good/ *** Better than good/ **** Wow! Great movie/ ***** One of my all time favorites
