MY GOAL IS TO SEE 100 NEW (to me) MOVIES BY OCTOBER 24, 2008

New movies, old movies, made for TV, on dvd, on TV, in a theater... anything. I just want to increase my movie knowledge by 100 movies in 100 days.

Day 46, total films watched: 52

Spill -Cable TV- ***

I rather liked this stupid 1996 Brian Bosworth actioner about a chemical spill. Sue me.

Day 45, total films watched: 51

Fletch -Cable TV-**
Fletch Lives -Cable TV-**

I had always wanted to see this films, so my expectations were pretty high. The films didn't meet my expectations, but they were lots of fun.
I am not sure which one I liked better. I liked the story of Fletch Lives better, but the original was funnier.

Nothing.

A little busy today working on some home improvment projects, but I promise to do a double feature tomorrow.

Day 43, total films watched: 49

Trouble Man -DVD- ***

This soul cinema flick stars Roberts Hooks as... Mr. T.
No, not that Mr. T. Still, how cool is that? He is only known as Mr. T as he goes around Los Angeles shooting people and drinking lots of Coke.

Drive In -Bootleg DVD- ****

This is one of those DVDs I bought at the horror convention. I don't have absolute proof that this isn't a legitimate copy... but I have my suspicions. For starters: the box has no back cover, just 2 front covers. And the DVD menu looks like the same one my DVD recorder produce. Also, the movie has the logo bug for some cable channel in the bottom corner.
My experience with this film goes back a couple years. For starters, I had always wanted to see this film. It was directed by Gilligan's Island vet Rod Amateau an it's about one of my favorite subjects in the world: the drive in!
I ordered a copy from some shady lady off eBay a few years ago. When I opened up the package, there was no DVD. Just an empty case.
So, I sent it back and I received a new DVD that just didn't work at all. I sent that back and received a new DVD. That one didn't work either (no kidding.) Once again I sent it back and I got a new one. I put it in the machine and it played for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Then it froze. It did this on every machine I tried it on.
Not wanting to pay for shipping the DVD back a third time (which would have made the shipping price substantially higher than the DVD itself, I just up.
I figured I would never see this film.
After buying it again this past weekend, I decided to give it another spin. I loved it. The first 70 minutes (that I had seen before) were great, again. Plus the ending was better than I imagined.

Day 41, total films watched: 47

Rockin' in the Rockies -Cable- **

This is the only Three Stooges feature length flick featuring the Moe, Larry & Curly trio. It's not the best... not the worst.

Day 40, total films watched: 46

Chatterbox -bootleg DVD- **

I bought this at the horror convention, and I can see why it wasn't available on Amazon.
Chatterbox is a 1970s sex comedy about a women who has talking... uh... body part.
The film features 1970s TV icon Rip Taylor and is far more silly than sexy.
Anyway, when the girl and her... uh... well... they call her Virgina. The girl and she sees a doctor who eventually puts her on tour with Virgina (who has quite a singing voice.)
Far less dirty than the plot implies, this film is much more innocent than films like American Pie or 40 Year Old Virgin and I liked it better than both.

Day 39, total films watched: 45

A Cars Life -DVD- **

Wow, this was weird. Not really long enough to be considered a movie, this CGI film combines the title of A Bugs Life with Cars and tells a story that sorta resembles Finding Nemo on wheels.
It's about a teen (car) who wants to feel more grown up so he gets tricked out and then disobeys dad and gets lost in the badlands. Then he gets carjacked and they try and sell him for scrap.
Weird, but not as weird as Transmorphers.

Day 38, total films watched: 44

Nothing

Day two of the Monster Mania thingie. I did watch part of Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and bought a few DVDs.

Friday, August 22, 2008

Day 37, total films watched: 44

Nothing

I was attending the Monster Mania Horror convention so I didn't get to see any films. I did see two of the three Coreys... Haim and Feldman, but not Hart.

Day 36, total films watched: 44

Transmorphers -DVD- */*****

Yeah, this was a tough one to rate.
From the makers of "Snakes on a Train" this is a blatant rip off of Transformers. It's was some of the most inept film making I have ever seen... but I loved it. I can't wait to watch it again.
The audio track was not synched correctly and lots of sound effects were missing (this has been corrected on newer DVDs I am told) and that added to the fun. Watching a man shake a gun to imply it's firing and to hear silence is HYSTERICAL.
Bad CG, bad story, bad acting... just plain bad.
I loved it.

Day 35, total films watched: 43

Lets Go To Prison -Cable TV- **

This late 2006 theatrical release starred Dak Shepard who, until I saw this, I assumed was a video game character.
This is a comedy about prison stabbing, rape and corruption. Yeah, it's THAT funny.
A few laugh out loud moments and an overall good level of "watchability" made this an easy film to watch.
Nothing great, but I have seen much worse.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Day 34, total films watched: 42

Black Dragon -DVD- **

This was a late 80's Jackie Chan flick where Jackie plays a fool who accidentally becomes a mafia boss. Then he gets involved with a plot that I swear was a recycled episode of Three's Company.
Along the way (and it was a long way... 2 hours 7 minutes of subtitled cinema) Jackie has a couple of minutes of fighting.
Yep, not your typical Jackie Chan flick... and that's not really a good thing.
Still, it was a nice period film and the actual fights were really good... but too few and too short.

Day 33, total films watched: 41

Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park -DVD- ***

I have always wanted to see this one! Produced in the late 1970s this features the legendary rockers as superheros (with actual superpowers) fighting a theme park magnate who creates evil robots.
The movie starts off super strong, but falls apart a little at the end. I actually found the story a bit tough to follow once it got towards the end. The Kiss members had talismen that gave them powers, but I didn't exactly get how that worked. Perhaps I need to see it again.
Anyway, think of it as Scooby-Doo combined Kiss... only Kiss can shoot lasers out of their eyes and teleport.

Clone Wars -Movie Theater-***

Jabba the Hutt has a baby named Stinky. Hee hee hee.

Saturday, August 16, 2008

Day 31, total films watched: 39

Swing Vote -Movie Theater- ***

Pretty solid film helped by a great performance by Kelsey Grammer. The ending is a let down, but they kinda painted themselves into a corner.

Friday, August 15, 2008

Day 30, total films watched: 38

Nothing.

I did watch a bunch of episodes of Huckleberry Hound, but that doesn't count.

Thursday, August 14, 2008

Day 29, total films watched: 38

Rattlers -DVD- ****
Stanley -Dollar Store DVD- **

I did a snake themed double feature here because I knew I wouldn't see anything on Friday and I needed my snake time.
Rattlers was a great 1970s horror film where super aggressive snakes bite everyone that moves.
Stanley was like Willard but with snakes... and the guy who played Jo's father on Facts of Life.
Not a really well crafted flick, this starts out solid but then falls apart in the end. But, you do see a woman bite the head off a snake.

Day 28, total films watched: 36

Boa vs. Python -DVD- ****

This is one of those movies where you need other people to watch it with you so you can be sure you didn't fall asleep and dream most of the story.
A killer Boa is on the loose and only Python can stop him... or her... and maybe I have the snakes reversed.
Either way, you get to see snakes eating people, a cgi train and a sex scene with a woman and a snake.

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Day 27, total films watched: 35

Glory Daze -DVD- **

This was a bizarre cameo filled flick about a bunch of college graduates who can't decide what to do with their lives.
It stars Ben Affleck, Sam Rockwell, and French Stewart and features cameos by Brendan Frasier, Leah Remini, Matthew Mcconaughey, Alyssa Milano and Matt Damon.
It was pointless but fun to watch.

Day 26, total films watched: 34

Animalympics -Cable TV- ****

Wow! What a fun movie this was. It was produced in the late 1970s and basically is an animated version of the Olympics featuring animals.
Clever, well paced, good voice cast and full of good animation this was awesome.

Day 25, total films watched: 33

College Road Trip -DVD rental- ****

I was surprised at how much I loved this film. Martin Lawrence is hysterical and the entire plot is funny and well paced. Plus there is a pig in the film. I love the pig.

Day 24, total films watched: 32

Phantom of Chinatown - Cable TV - ***

From 1940 this whodunit stars Keye Luke (legendary Asian actor perhaps best known today as the old guy from Gremlins) as detective Jimmy Wong. Fun little film with a pretty good mystery storyline.

Friday, August 8, 2008

Day 23, total films watched: 31

Alvin & the Chipmunks meet Frankenstein -DVD- **

The songs weren't memrable, the plot was ludicris and the 1 hour 15 minute running time still felt long... but it was Alvin, Simon and Theodore meeting Frankenstein. How could I not love it.

Thursday, August 7, 2008

Day 22, total films watched: 30

RSVP -DVD- **

This is a horror film (remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Rope) starring Jay Mewes. Need I say more?

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Day 21, total films watched: 29

Stump the Band -DVD- ***

Awesome 2006 horror movie, marred by pitiful digital effects in the final scene. Odd because the rest of the film showcased great practical effects.
This film featured music and a cameo by the legendary Robbie Rist (Oliver from the Brady Bunch) and a fun performance by Danny Cooksey (the red haired kid from Diff'rent Strokes.)
The plot is this: female rock band gets stranded in the woods, creepy people capture them and cut their feet off... stumping them.

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

Day 20, total films watched: 28

Pieces -region 2 DVD- ***
Doomsday -DVD- ***

Pieces is one of the funniest splatter films I have ever seen. Lots of chainsaw killings, plenty of dismemberments and a kung fu instructor.

Doomsday is a bizarre Mad Max type film. Awesome visuals and cool effects.

Monday, August 4, 2008

Day 19, total films watched: 26

Resident Evil: Extinction -Cable- **

This is the third chapter in the Resident Evil three chapter thingie. Lots of fun. Amazing how Mila keeps her makeup so nice as she fights zombies in the desert.

Sunday, August 3, 2008

Day 18, total films watched: 25

Lost Boys: The Tribe -DVD- ****

Solid sequel to the original, Feldman is awesome returning as Edgar Frog. Unfortunatly Haim shows up in a scene during the credits and that's it.

Day 17, total films watched: 24

I Am Legend -DVD rental- **
Headin' Home -Cable- **
Unacompanied Minors -Cable- **

I was looking to rent Lost Boys 2, but the machine at the grocery store didn't have it. Still, I was anxious to try out the machine so I grabbed "I Am Legend" a film I didn't get around to over the holidays.
It's a fun movie. I have seen the story done before (with Vincent Price) and there weren't many surprises here.

Headin' Home is a Babe Ruth bio-pic that is very short on truth still it was fun. It's a silent film from the early 1920s and features funny title cards such as "She thought Babe was the most handsome man in town... it was a small town." It gets a bit muddled in the last 20 minutes.

Unacompanied Minors was a 2006 film that was basically Home Alone in an airport. Lewis Black is hysterical.

Way of the Dragon -DVD- ****

Bruce Lee vs Chuck Norris! How awesome is that??!!?? I always wanted to see this one, really glad I did.

RATINGS SCALE * Not very good/ ** Good/ *** Better than good/ **** Wow! Great movie/ ***** One of my all time favorites
