MY GOAL IS TO SEE 100 NEW (to me) MOVIES BY OCTOBER 24, 2008

New movies, old movies, made for TV, on dvd, on TV, in a theater... anything. I just want to increase my movie knowledge by 100 movies in 100 days.

Demons -DVD- ***

Awesome Italian demon film shot in Germany. The plot involves a group of people slain by demons watching a film about people being slain by demons.
Lots of impalations (is that a word?) dismemberizations (I am pretty sure that isn't a word) and a few demonizations (probably a word, and I probably didn't use it correctly.)

The Day the Earth Stood Still - Cable TV- ****

Knowing that a remake is on the horizon I thought now was a perfect time to see the original... but I didn't own a copy.
Luckily it was scheduled to air on TV... unluckily it was airing on AMC.
I hate AMC. Anyway I decided to watch it anyway and sit through the absurd amount of commercial breaks filled with promos (many for the film I was already watching!)
In addition as the film played the bottom of the screen constantly reminded me that a new episodes of "Mad Men" was on it's way. I don't know who these men are, but they were probably mad that a classic sci-fi film was being treated like a rerun of Judge Judy.
As for the film, it was great. Really a wonderful film with a cool message and some really memorable moments.

Spartacus - Cable TV- *****

One of those films I always thought I should see. In fact, I am a little embarrassed that I never saw it before. One of the reasons I had avoided it was that I generally don't like any film that takes place before the Civil War. Another reason was that I simply didn't own this movie. So, this week I recorded a pan and scan broadcast off HBO and I couldn't have been more pleased. What an excellent movie.

Day 96, total films watched: 97

Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi -Cable- ***

This was a very cool documentary on a skater who found drugs and then god. Narrated by Dennis Hopper, it was uplifting and featured many cool pro skaters including Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Jason Lee, Steve Caballero, Eric Dressen, John Lucero, Gary Coleman, Simon Rex and Paris Hilton.
I was kidding on the last three... but it did feature Pauly Shore and David Arquette. No joke.

Day 95, total films watched: 96

An American Carol - Movie Theater -**

This uneven film featured some great, great laughs and a solid ending. Also, John Voight puts in one of his better performances, playing George Washington amidst the ongoing farce designed to poke fun at Hollywood's far left.
The film features a pretty impressive lineup of stars including: Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper, John Voight, James Woods, Leslie Nielson, Davis Alan Grier, Christopher McDonald, John O'Hurley, Kevin Sorbo, Gary Coleman, Bill O'Reilly, Simon Rex and Paris Hilton.

Tarzan and the Mermaids -Cable TV- ***

This exciting 1948 Weissmuller Tarzan flick really showcased the reason I started this little challenge. I recorded this of AMC on a 6 hour VHS tape back before AMC started showing commercials, so this was probably close to a decade ago. Since then I have watched 2 of the 5 Tarzan flicks that this tape held. Now, I can bump that up to 3.
This was a pretty typical 1940s jungle picture with Tarzan trying to protect a girl from a group of natives being led by an evil westerner pretending to be a god.
There are no mermaids in this film.

Day 93, total films watched: 94

Dance With Me Henry -hulu.com- **

This is the final collaboration of comedy giants Abbott & Costello. Made just a couple of years after they revived their careers with the Universal monster flicks, this one puts Lou as a parent who owns a theme park and Bud as a pal who has problems with the mob. It has an excellent chase scene at the end, but otherwise is underwhelming.

Day 92, total films watched: 93

Bottle Rocket - DVD - ***

This is one of those films that I had really wanted to see for many years. It was good overall. It had a great soundtrack, good acting and a good story. Really worth checking out.

Day 91, total films watched: 92

Swing Parade of 1946 - DVD - ***

During a recent bout of Stooge-mania (who hasn't suffered from Stooge-mania) I picked up a DVD set of "rare" Stooge projects and one of them was Swing Parade. This was a feature film (the last with Moe, Larry AND Curly) where the Stooges play comic relief to a bigger story about a girl who wants to be a star.
Pretty typical stuff, but with music by Louis Jordan and hi jinks by the Stooges, you can't go wrong.

Day 90, total films watched: 91

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl - airplane inflight movie- ***
Diminished Capacity -airplane inflight movie- **

I didn't know what to make of either of these films because I had never seen a trailer and I am not even sure I heard of them. Still, very entertaining.
Kit Kittredge: An American Girl was a nice Encyclopedia Brown type story involving a little girl, hobos, the Great Depression and Stanley Tucci looking like The Iron Shiek. The film was sweet, funny and told a compelling story.

Diminished Capacity stars Matthew Broderick as a man suffering from brain damage who goes to see his uncle (Alan Alda) who is suffering from Alzheimers. Oh yeah, it's a comedy.
I didn't realize this for about 25 minutes. It was too silly to be touching and too sad to be really funny.

L.A. Heat -Cable- *

Looking for something to watch early in the morning in a Disneyland hotel room, this seemed like a good choice. Afterall, I was only a short ride from Los Angeles and I had spent the past week there.
This was a bad movie. I hate to say that since, I bet somebody worked really hard on it. But it was bad.
It starred Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs who you may remember as Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington on Welcome Back Kotter. Also Jim Brown is in this film. It's a bad, cheap film about policemen that has every silly cliche all rolled into on film.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua -Theater- ****

I loved this stupid film. Yep, it's about dogs that talk. They also go to Mexico where dogs also talk, but they have accents.
I saw it at Disney's El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Before the film, the actually canine stars of the film appeared on stage and did tricks for us.
Adorable all around.

Day 81, total films watched: 87

Hancock -airplane inflight movie- ***
Get Smart -airplane inflight movie- **
Meet Dave -airplane inflight movie- ****

Wow, I love the new inflight entertainment systems on Continental Airlines. If I could be promised one of these, I would always fly Continental. Basically it's a personal 'on demand' service where the movie plays on the back of the seat in front of you. First film I watched was Hancock. I loved the first 45 minutes of this film, I hated the last 45. I don't want to spoil it, so I will just say the big reveal about Hancock not being "alone" was stupid. Stupid, unessasary and annoying. Boo!

Get Smart was a film I expected more from. It was entertaining, but not as funny as I would have hoped for.

Meet Dave on the other hand was much more than I expected. Perhaps the fact that this bombed so badly made me have such low expectations that it worked. It was great. Very funny. Basically you have Eddie Murphy playing a cross between Balki on Perfect Strangers and Herman's Head. Funny stuff. Weird ending, but still lots of fun.

Day 80, total films watched: 84

Nothing.

In preparation for my trip to Los Angeles I watched my favorite L.A. film, Jimmy Hollywood.
The film stars Joe Pesci and Christian Slater and tells a story about Hollywood during the end of it's seedy days (Hollywood lost a lot of it's luster in late 1960s until a new Hollywood renaissance occurred in the early 2000s.)
It's a film about crime and vigilantes. Highly recommended if you haven't see it... but it wasn't new to me.

Day 79, total films watched: 84

Callaway Went Thataway - Cable TV- ****

In preparation for a trip to Hollywood I watched this minor classic featuring Fred MacMurray as a TV executive who must track down an old western movie star. The film was funny and had some great shots of old Hollywood. I especially liked the climax shot at the historic Los Angeles Coliseum.

Thursday, October 2, 2008

Day 77, total films watched: 81

The Rocketeer -Cable TV- *****

This is easily one of my all time favorite movies. I could watch this movie again right now. I had put this one off for years and years and I can't imagine why. It's got a great story, great action, brilliant music, wonderful set design and a couple of perfectly cast villains.
I love the Bulldog Cafe, I love the destruction of the "land" in the Hollywoodland sign, I love the flight at a blimp, I love this movie.
What an exciting film.
If you are like me and haven't seen it, here is the plot:
Howard Hughes created a jet pack but it's now lost. A young man finds it and ultimately becomes a superhero. Some mafioso, Nazis, FBI and others are trying to get it back. Fantastic!
Set in Hollywood in 1938.

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

Day 78, total films watched: 83

Miracle Mile -Cable TV- ***
Fly Me To The Moon 3D -Movie Theater- ***

Miracle Mile is a cool 1988 thriller about a nuclear attack on Los Angeles. The film is told mostly in real time and has a great ending. I enjoyed it a lot. It's one of those films that is better the less you know about it, so I recommend you see it if you have Starz. It pops up there pretty often.

Let me say this... Fly Me To The Moon 2D wouldn't merit 3 stars, but in 3D... awesome. I am a sucker for 3D films and this was a pretty dang good one. It's a silly little flick with three flies (that act like Alvin & the Chipmunks) who stowaway on the first moon mission.
The film was actually better than I expected, it had some pretty slow pacing which is a big change for a modern cartoon. Of course this could be because it's actually a Belgian flick, or because it was originally 49 minutes and then expanded to 90 making them cram extra scenes into a fast paced film.
Either way, I liked the pace and loved the 3D.
Plus there was a space chimp in this and the voices of Kelly Ripa and Christopher Lloyd (who plays a character named Grandpa McFly... perhaps it was a Back To The Future reference.)

Day 76, total films watched: 80

Eagle Eye - IMAX Theater - ***

Man, this was fun. Action packed. Really, as if they opened up a film can and packed as much action in as possible.
It also was one of the most preposterous, silly films I have ever seen.
It was like Enemy of the State crossed with... uh... a silly film with more action than Enemy of the State.

Day 70, total films watched: 78

Rainbow Valley -DVD- ***

This 1935 B-Western is far more entertaining than most of the other early John Wayne flicks.
This one is pretty simple: A road is coming to Rainbow Valley, some baddies want to stop it, and only John Wayne can save the road.
Good times.

Day 69, total films watched: 77

The Foot Fist Way - DVD -**

This was a low budget film made a few years ago that just found it's way onto DVD. The film was pretty well made and had some good laughs, but it lacked someone to cheer for. Not since that documentary about Madonna have I seen a film where I disliked the main character so much.

Monday, September 22, 2008

Day 68, total films watched: 76

I Accuse My Parents -VHS- **

This silly little 1944 flick is a preachy lesson in parenting. The basic plot is as follows... boy meets girl, boy joins the mob, boy goes to jail, boy blames his drunken absent parents and (get this) THE JUDGE AGREES WITH HIM!
Truly bizarre.
But, it was lots of fun and my standards for entertainment are pretty low.
I watched this on an old Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode and it was one of the better MST3K episodes I have seen in a while.
I actually think this film would have been just as funny without them! Really, really bizarre.

Sunday, September 21, 2008

Day 67, total films watched: 75

The Three Stooges In Orbit -DVD- ****
A Boy Named Charlie Brown -DVD- **

Interesting double feature. These were both part of (non sequential) film series that I had cracked into in the past 67 days.
The Three Stooges were certainly much more fun in this film than the last Stooge film I had viewed (Snow White and the Three Stooges- Day 55) and also better than (Rockin' In The Rockies - Day 41.)
The film features the Stooges protecting Southern California from invaders from Mars.

A Boy Named Charlie Brown was the first Peanuts film produced and it wasn't nearly as good as the Bon Voyage Charlie Brown flick I saw on day 60.
This film didn't tell a compelling story and left me watching the screen waiting for the backgrounds to repeat.

I spent much of the day either driving to a rodeo or driving on Rodeo. You try and guess which.

Day 65, total films watched: 73

The African Queen - Cable - ****

Every time I mention this project to people they always assume I mean "The AFI 100 years of movies."
I never really paid much attention to that list (since my favorite films involve kung fu or monkeys) but I recently looked over it and saw that I have watched over 50% of the flicks on it. This is one of the ones I had not seen.
Not sure why it took me so long, as this always appealed to me. I had heard that this film helped inspire The Jungle Cruise in Disneyland... and you can see that a little in the style of the boats and the scenes with the hippos and such.
Anyway, it's a nice little adventure.

Day 64, total films watched: 72

Alias Jesse James -Cable TV- ****

An excellent Bob Hope comedy where Hope inadvertently sells an insurance policy to Jesse James, then follows the gunslinger around to keep him from getting hurt.
Even better than the witty banter are the cameos: James Garner AS Bret Maverick, Fess Parker AS Davy Crockett, Gary Cooper, Roy Rogers, Hugh O'Brien as Wyatt Earp, James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon and Ward Bond as Major Seth Adams.
Very cool film.
I also found one of the females in the film to be super hot. I looked her up to find out she had died of old age a few years ago.

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Day 63, total films watched: 71

The Gunslinger - VHS - **

The Gunslinger is a mediocre Roger Corman western about a lady sheriff. The problem with the film is the lack of action and the laborious pacing.
However, I was watching this film on Mystery Science Theater 3000 so I was kinda watching wisecracking robots watch this film. That made it a lot more fun.
The original running time was only 71 minutes so that required little editing by the MST3K staff to fit the film, commercials and their wrap around segments into a 2 hour block.
Pretty standard western stuff here, Beverly Garland (who is often great) is a little flat in her performance here, and her motivation for taking on the towns saloon owner seems a bit hazy.

Day 62, total films watched: 70

The Sasquatch Gang -Cable TV- **

This was a limited release film from the makers of Napoleon Dynamite (not sure which of the "makers" were involved in this one.) It features Justin Long and some other people. Pretty funny stuff, nothing special... but very fun.

Day 61, total films watched: 69

The Horse That Played Centerfield - VHS- **

One of the last "mom & pop" video stores in my area just announced they were closing. Sad news, but I was able to pick up some VHS tapes for just a buck each. One of them was this rarity.
Produced a two animated specials (then edited together -pretty seamlessly- to a VHS movie) this tells the story of a horse that plays baseball. Not much more to it than that.

Sunday, September 14, 2008

Day 60, total films watched: 68

Bon Voyage Charlie Brown (and Don't Come Back) -Cable- ***

A solidly entertaining feature length flick from Charles Schultz and Co. This features the gang going to France where they encounter a series of capers. Snoopy & Woodstock steal the film.
Plus you get to look into the animation style of Charles Schultz who never met a model sheet he didn't... uh... I don't think he ever met a model sheet.
It's fun to watch characters defy gravity as they float over top of the background, watch hair, watches and fingers disappear and reappear at random.

Saturday, September 13, 2008

Day 59, total films watched: 67

Juggernaut -Cable TV- ***

This film was a tense thriller about a bomb on a big boat. Richard Harris stars and Anthony Hopkins and Omar Sharif are along for the ride.
Really, really good flick from 1974.

Day 58, total films watched: 66

Bodyguard- Dollar DVD-***

This is a pretty awesome film where Sonny Chiba takes on the mob. As a footnote, this is where Tarantino ripped off the biblical speech that Sam Jackson says in Pulp Fiction. Of course, this film ripped it off from a little book called The Bible.

Day 57, total films watched: 65

The Wizard of Gore -DVD- ***

Day 56, total films watched: 64

The Honeymooners - Cable TV- ***

This is the 2005 Cedric the Entertainer version of the classic show. Being a big fan of the original series (and a bigger fan of the later version filmed in color) I was hesitant to see this.
Very hesitant.
Perhaps my low expectations led to it being pretty dang good. Very funny and very good

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Day 55, total films watched: 63

Snow White & The Three Stooges -DVD- **

This is one of those films I always wanted to see. I had seen a few clips of it and had high hopes for the whole flick.
Sadly, it didn't live up to expectations.
The Stooges aren't in the film enough and the jokes are few and far between. Still, it's a pleasant film and it has some good battle scenes at the end. Yup, battle scenes.

Monday, September 8, 2008

Day 54, total films watched: 62

The Great Los Angeles Earthquake -DVD- ***
The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning -DVD- ****

I found this TV movie a massive L.A. earthquake in a bin at Wal-mart. It was originally aired over two nights, I assume, and it runs about 3 hours. It's pretty good considering the running time insists on making the pace a bit slow and the story a bit bloated.
They had great earthquake footage and some rather good performances (the best being from the guy who played Haim's dad in License to Drive.)

Little Mermaid is one of the more lovable entries in to the Disney cannon. It has several great characters and most of them return for this one. This one tells the (familiar) story of King Triton coping with his wife's death by being a really grumpy jerk and banning music from the undersea kingdom. Not sure where, but I know that I have seen this story told before.

Day 53, total films watched: 60

Pardon Us -Cable- **

This 1931 comedy was the first feature effort from Laurel & Hardy. It doesn't really reach the levels that the duo reached in subsequent years, but its loads of fun.
The pair play boob-ish bootleggers that wind up in prison (hence the witty title) and drive their captors daffy.

Saturday, September 6, 2008

Day 52, total films watched: 59

Faith of My Fathers -DVD- ***

This was a made for tv film about John McCain's time in a POW camp. The film told a compelling story and through use of flashbacks kept it from being monotonus (I am sure being in a cell for 1,900 days is monotous... at best.)
The highlight of the film is Scott Glenn as McCain's father. Good stuff, but never rises too much above the TV film level.

Friday, September 5, 2008

Day 51, total films watched: 58

Jocks -DVD- ***
Omega Man -DVD- ****

Ahh, I love the double feature. First was Jocks a silly little comedy from the 1980s about a team of misfits that compete in a tennis championship. Solidly entertaining.

Omega Man was absolutely awesome. I had low expectations since I had recently seen I Am Legend, but this was much more enjoyable. Better lead performance and the changes to the story were for the better. Rather than just being random killing machines, the villains had some character, some meaning, something to really fear.
I also loved the visual look of the film and the score. Great stuff.

Day 49, total films watched: 56

Tomboy -DVD- ***
Sergent Murphy -Cable TV- ****

To start off a bizarre double feature I watched Tomboy another film off the 'School Dazed' 8 film collection of comedies from the 1970s and 80s. Oddly enough, despite being on the 'School Dazed' set, Tomboy featured no school.
The film is a piece of cinematic junk food about a female mechanic who falls in love with a race car driver. Along the way we also get to see some bad car racing, some wild parties and the greatest doughnut commercial ever.

Sergent Murphy is one of the early films of future president Ronald Reagan. In this one Reagan plays a soldier who joined the army so he could hang out with his best friend Sergent Murphy.... who is an artillery horse.
Reagan and Murphy go through a series of comic misadventures an eventually Murphy becomes a big time show horse and Donald Crisp wears a ladies hat.
Boy, that's funnier if you guys know who Donald Crisp was. If only it was 1938.

The Pom Pom Girls -DVD- **

I bought a set of 8 silly comedies from the 1970s and 1980s a few months ago and I watched 4. This is one of the ones I skipped.
It stars Robert Carradine and it's a silly film with almost no discernible plot.
Still, it was light and fun. But really... almost no pom poms.

Day 47, total films watched: 53

Block-heads -Cable TV- ***

This was a Laurel & Hardy flick from the 1930s. I love how films of this era were so concise. Not a second of the film is wasted and the story wraps up and flashes "The End" on screen so fast you might not know it's coming.

Drive In -Bootleg DVD- ****

This is one of those DVDs I bought at the horror convention. I don't have absolute proof that this isn't a legitimate copy... but I have my suspicions. For starters: the box has no back cover, just 2 front covers. And the DVD menu looks like the same one my DVD recorder produce. Also, the movie has the logo bug for some cable channel in the bottom corner.
My experience with this film goes back a couple years. For starters, I had always wanted to see this film. It was directed by Gilligan's Island vet Rod Amateau an it's about one of my favorite subjects in the world: the drive in!
I ordered a copy from some shady lady off eBay a few years ago. When I opened up the package, there was no DVD. Just an empty case.
So, I sent it back and I received a new DVD that just didn't work at all. I sent that back and received a new DVD. That one didn't work either (no kidding.) Once again I sent it back and I got a new one. I put it in the machine and it played for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Then it froze. It did this on every machine I tried it on.
Not wanting to pay for shipping the DVD back a third time (which would have made the shipping price substantially higher than the DVD itself, I just up.
I figured I would never see this film.
After buying it again this past weekend, I decided to give it another spin. I loved it. The first 70 minutes (that I had seen before) were great, again. Plus the ending was better than I imagined.

Chatterbox -bootleg DVD- **

I bought this at the horror convention, and I can see why it wasn't available on Amazon.
Chatterbox is a 1970s sex comedy about a women who has talking... uh... body part.
The film features 1970s TV icon Rip Taylor and is far more silly than sexy.
Anyway, when the girl and her... uh... well... they call her Virgina. The girl and she sees a doctor who eventually puts her on tour with Virgina (who has quite a singing voice.)
Far less dirty than the plot implies, this film is much more innocent than films like American Pie or 40 Year Old Virgin and I liked it better than both.

A Cars Life -DVD- **

Wow, this was weird. Not really long enough to be considered a movie, this CGI film combines the title of A Bugs Life with Cars and tells a story that sorta resembles Finding Nemo on wheels.
It's about a teen (car) who wants to feel more grown up so he gets tricked out and then disobeys dad and gets lost in the badlands. Then he gets carjacked and they try and sell him for scrap.
Weird, but not as weird as Transmorphers.

Transmorphers -DVD- */*****

Yeah, this was a tough one to rate.
From the makers of "Snakes on a Train" this is a blatant rip off of Transformers. It's was some of the most inept film making I have ever seen... but I loved it. I can't wait to watch it again.
The audio track was not synched correctly and lots of sound effects were missing (this has been corrected on newer DVDs I am told) and that added to the fun. Watching a man shake a gun to imply it's firing and to hear silence is HYSTERICAL.
Bad CG, bad story, bad acting... just plain bad.
I loved it.

Lets Go To Prison -Cable TV- **

This late 2006 theatrical release starred Dak Shepard who, until I saw this, I assumed was a video game character.
This is a comedy about prison stabbing, rape and corruption. Yeah, it's THAT funny.
A few laugh out loud moments and an overall good level of "watchability" made this an easy film to watch.
Nothing great, but I have seen much worse.

Black Dragon -DVD- **

This was a late 80's Jackie Chan flick where Jackie plays a fool who accidentally becomes a mafia boss. Then he gets involved with a plot that I swear was a recycled episode of Three's Company.
Along the way (and it was a long way... 2 hours 7 minutes of subtitled cinema) Jackie has a couple of minutes of fighting.
Yep, not your typical Jackie Chan flick... and that's not really a good thing.
Still, it was a nice period film and the actual fights were really good... but too few and too short.

Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park -DVD- ***

I have always wanted to see this one! Produced in the late 1970s this features the legendary rockers as superheros (with actual superpowers) fighting a theme park magnate who creates evil robots.
The movie starts off super strong, but falls apart a little at the end. I actually found the story a bit tough to follow once it got towards the end. The Kiss members had talismen that gave them powers, but I didn't exactly get how that worked. Perhaps I need to see it again.
Anyway, think of it as Scooby-Doo combined Kiss... only Kiss can shoot lasers out of their eyes and teleport.

Pretty solid film helped by a great performance by Kelsey Grammer. The ending is a let down, but they kinda painted themselves into a corner.

I did watch a bunch of episodes of Huckleberry Hound, but that doesn't count.

Rattlers -DVD- ****
Stanley -Dollar Store DVD- **

I did a snake themed double feature here because I knew I wouldn't see anything on Friday and I needed my snake time.
Rattlers was a great 1970s horror film where super aggressive snakes bite everyone that moves.
Stanley was like Willard but with snakes... and the guy who played Jo's father on Facts of Life.
Not a really well crafted flick, this starts out solid but then falls apart in the end. But, you do see a woman bite the head off a snake.

Day 28, total films watched: 36

Boa vs. Python -DVD- ****

This is one of those movies where you need other people to watch it with you so you can be sure you didn't fall asleep and dream most of the story.
A killer Boa is on the loose and only Python can stop him... or her... and maybe I have the snakes reversed.
Either way, you get to see snakes eating people, a cgi train and a sex scene with a woman and a snake.

Day 27, total films watched: 35

Glory Daze -DVD- **

This was a bizarre cameo filled flick about a bunch of college graduates who can't decide what to do with their lives.
It stars Ben Affleck, Sam Rockwell, and French Stewart and features cameos by Brendan Frasier, Leah Remini, Matthew Mcconaughey, Alyssa Milano and Matt Damon.
It was pointless but fun to watch.

Day 26, total films watched: 34

Animalympics -Cable TV- ****

Wow! What a fun movie this was. It was produced in the late 1970s and basically is an animated version of the Olympics featuring animals.
Clever, well paced, good voice cast and full of good animation this was awesome.

College Road Trip -DVD rental- ****

I was surprised at how much I loved this film. Martin Lawrence is hysterical and the entire plot is funny and well paced. Plus there is a pig in the film. I love the pig.

Day 24, total films watched: 32

Phantom of Chinatown - Cable TV - ***

From 1940 this whodunit stars Keye Luke (legendary Asian actor perhaps best known today as the old guy from Gremlins) as detective Jimmy Wong. Fun little film with a pretty good mystery storyline.

Day 23, total films watched: 31

Alvin & the Chipmunks meet Frankenstein -DVD- **

The songs weren't memrable, the plot was ludicris and the 1 hour 15 minute running time still felt long... but it was Alvin, Simon and Theodore meeting Frankenstein. How could I not love it.

This is a horror film (remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Rope) starring Jay Mewes. Need I say more?

Day 21, total films watched: 29

Stump the Band -DVD- ***

Awesome 2006 horror movie, marred by pitiful digital effects in the final scene. Odd because the rest of the film showcased great practical effects.
This film featured music and a cameo by the legendary Robbie Rist (Oliver from the Brady Bunch) and a fun performance by Danny Cooksey (the red haired kid from Diff'rent Strokes.)
The plot is this: female rock band gets stranded in the woods, creepy people capture them and cut their feet off... stumping them.

Day 20, total films watched: 28

Pieces -region 2 DVD- ***
Doomsday -DVD- ***

Pieces is one of the funniest splatter films I have ever seen. Lots of chainsaw killings, plenty of dismemberments and a kung fu instructor.

Doomsday is a bizarre Mad Max type film. Awesome visuals and cool effects.

I Am Legend -DVD rental- **
Headin' Home -Cable- **
Unacompanied Minors -Cable- **

I was looking to rent Lost Boys 2, but the machine at the grocery store didn't have it. Still, I was anxious to try out the machine so I grabbed "I Am Legend" a film I didn't get around to over the holidays.
It's a fun movie. I have seen the story done before (with Vincent Price) and there weren't many surprises here.

Headin' Home is a Babe Ruth bio-pic that is very short on truth still it was fun. It's a silent film from the early 1920s and features funny title cards such as "She thought Babe was the most handsome man in town... it was a small town." It gets a bit muddled in the last 20 minutes.

Unacompanied Minors was a 2006 film that was basically Home Alone in an airport. Lewis Black is hysterical.

College -Cable- ****

Ahh, the silent film. This 1927 silent features Buster Keaton as a nerd who wants to win over the girl. Lots of wackiness (good) great stunts (good) blackface (oh... not so good) and the most bizarre ending in film history. I will post a spoiler in the comment section.

Soccer Dog -Cable- **
Soccer Dog: European Cup -Cable-***

Here is an interesting double feature... a few years ago I was thumbing through the movie listings and I saw Soccer Dog being a fan of animal flicks I was mildly interested. When I saw that the sequel was being played later that week I was very interested. The entire Soccer Dog franchise! The first film was the story of an orphan that finds a family and a dog and the dog kinda plays soccer (he's no Air Bud.)

The sequel has nothing to do with the first one, and I liked it better. In this one a scottish soccer player finds out he has a son and soon gets a soccer playing dog. It was actually a different breed of dog in this one, I think.

Day 8, total films watched:14

Silence of the Heart -DVD- **
Boatniks -DVD- ****
Superdad -DVD- **

Silence of the Heart rightly deserves only 1 star... but two scenes take place in Chuck E Cheese circa 1984 and a very young Urkel makes an appearance so I bumped it up to two stars. This was a made for TV flick about teen suicide. Chad Lowe plays the kid who ends it all, Howard Hessman is the absent father and Charlie Sheen is the guy with cool hair. Found this one at the dollar store.

Boatniks is another in the Disney live action library that I have always wanted to check out. Released in 1970 this flick features Norman Fell, Phil Silvers and another guy with a funny voice as bumbling jewel thieves who hide the money in hollowed out salami. I loved this one from beginning to end. Then I read the review on UltimateDisney.com (a site I usually agree with) and they said something like "possibly the worst Disney film ever." Maybe this batch of dollar store films and kung fu capers is lowering my standards.

"Superdad: Superbad" is how Leonard Maltin apparently reviewed Superdad when it came out in the early 1970s. I wonder if 35 years later he tried to review Superbad by writing "Superbad: Superdad." It would make no sense, but Leonard would laugh and laugh.
Anyway, the film was not super bad, in fact... it was almost super good. The cast (Kurt Russell, Bruno Kirby, Dick Van Dyke, etc) were funny- with one exception: Bob Crane. Crane was awful. I really wanted to see it for his performance and wow, what a let down. Crane isn't funny at all and plays his curmudgeon character as if he was in a cop drama - not a silly film about a father who doesn't want his kid to hang out at the beach.
Also, thumbs down to Disney for making a DVD cover featuring Kurt's character in a tux with his bride (in gown) next to a disapproving Crane (also in tux.) Not bad artwork... except it spoils the end of the film. A "will they or won't they stay together" romance comedy falls a little flat when you KNOW it ends with a wedding. Booo!
Still, I will probably watch this one again. It has some real good LOL moments.

Ninja Phantom Heroes -DVD- **
The Snake, The Tiger, The Crane -DVD- ***

A few months ago I picked up a 50 Movie Pack of Martial Arts films. It was 50 chop-socky flicks for under $20... and I had never seen any of them before. I saw one the other day (Ninja Finishing School or something) and today I watched 2 more.

First was Ninja Phantom Heroes... or as this DVD called it "Ninja Empire." I liked this one. It had some wild action and some ninjas that did odd dances that made them disappear... and re-appear a few feet away. They used this power a lot, but never in any way that benefited them, their opponent or the viewer.
The film did have a terribly muddled plot and was so confusing I wished I had a map.

The Snake, The Tiger, The Crane was not as confusing. The king had screwed up and decided to kill himself before he was killed. And he cuts his daughters arm off. So she goes out to avenge him by killing the people that would have killed him had he not killed himself. If it wasn't for the bizarre subplot where she pretends to be crazy so she can impress a guy into marrying her (which in turn make his mom so happy she hangs herself) I may have given this 4 stars.

On a side note, I bought a couple new DVDs and recorded a few things off cable that may make it on the list of 100 movies. I now have the Clint Eastwood/Orangutan films, Mr. Bean's second movie, a 1970s Disney film co-starring Norman Fell and a 1940s comedy featuring a talking tuba.

Flesh -DVD- **

This was one of a trilogy of Andy Warhol films directed by Paul Morrisey. I had seen the other two (Trash and Heat) many years ago.
It's sort of the Warhol version of Midnight Cowboy (another film I haven't seen) with Joe Dallesandro in the lead role.
The film shows lots of flesh... sadly most of it is Joe Dallesandro.
Hard film to rate, it's bizarre, but has a unique editing style... but that may just problems with the camera equipment.

Day 5, total films watched:8

Unlikely Angel -DVD- ***
Ninja: The Protector -DVD- **
The Cat From Outer Space -DVD- ****

I decided to see three films so that I can either finish BEFORE 100 days or I can take the occasional day off from watching new films (or movies altogether.)
First I watched Unlikely Angel a Christmas film where Dolly Parton dies and has to prove herself to St Peter (Roddy McDowell) by fixing a family that has problems. My two favorite things about this movie were: 1) The daughter of the clan looked just like Ellen Degeneres.... and 2) WKRP's Gary Sandy in a wig pretending to be a tough guy.

Ninja films are always entertaining. This particular bit of kung foolery consists of a plot about male models, rape, suicide and ninjas. Although most people in the film don't believe in ninjas.

The Cat From Outer Space! What a cool title. Great Disney flick with a cornball story about an alien cat. In addition to Roddy McDowell (who I was pleased to see twice in one day) this film has McLean Stevenson, Harry Morgan, Mister Ed's owner, the nerdy white cop from Sanford & Son and Sandy Duncan.

Day 4, total films watched: 5

Moon Pilot -DVD- **

This was a Disney film about space flight. The DVD cover shows a chimp, so I expected a return to the Space Chimp shenanigans of day 3. This film actually only uses the chimp in a few early scenes. The rest of the film is a fun caper about spies and aliens.

Harlem Nights -DVD- ***
Santo & Blue Demon vs. Dracula & The Wolfman -DVD- ***

Starting things off with a double feature! Harlem Nights was much better than I expected. Very funny and so cool to see Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx! Santo was one of the many subtitled Mexican wrestling films I have seen lately. This was a good one with lots of solid action.

RATINGS SCALE * Not very good/ ** Good/ *** Better than good/ **** Wow! Great movie/ ***** One of my all time favorites
